Intro
For the 8th year in a row, I took part in the Game Maker’s Toolkit (GMTK) Game Jam. Released in 2026, That’s My Stuff is a top-down action game where you play as a bandit, out for revenge after being scammed for a lot of money. Years later, the bandit returns to dispense their own justice by infiltrating the three locations where their enemy is known to have valuables. Gather as many items as you can, avoid detection, and escape before the countdown reaches 0.
Game Jam Theme
The jam’s theme was ‘Countdown’. Our initial idea was a shopping simulator, where the player is a chronic last-minute shopper, and enters the supermarket at 8:59pm for “just a few things” but has to actually leave within 60 seconds. Due to our use of an asset pack this year, this idea had to be changed to one that fitted the assets available. And so, the idea became a game about thievery in an outdoor environment instead.
Compared to the Last Project
2025’s project Bobbin’ & Weavin’ was a small production with 4 team members. The 2026 team was also close-knit. This time our team didn’t even have an asset artist on-hand, so we made use of an asset pack. The team consisted of three programmers and one artist who drew the logo for us.
Like all of my projects with the Fire Otters group, my two coding friends are in separate time-zones, so I could work on the game while they were sleeping and vice-versa.
Summary of Development
The Jam had a 4-day limit, though we only spent 2 days on the Jam because the group decided not to take part for the entire four days this time.
Prior to beginning, we did brainstorm and I spent some time practicing in the game engine, Godot.
Day 1 was about basic functionality. Get a tile map & collisions to work, a playable character & camera, pickups, and early work on the user interface.
Day 2 was spent applying art assets to the game, refining the UI & gameplay, adding a tutorial level & 3 level layouts, implementing controls for mobile devices, and preparing for the itch.io launch.
The game released 3 hours prior to the Jam ending, with no major bugs. That’s My Stuff! released in a state where we were happy with the gameplay loop & the stability/presentation. Our jam submission this time was relaxed, although it was the same last-minute deal of play-testing & fixing minor bugs that we found before publishing.
Version History
v1.0 released without major bugs. A post-jam version is planned, where we will fix bugs & tune the game’s balancing.
